Greetings, Your Godliness!
What would you do if you found out that the person you’ve been judging, villainizing, hating on, resenting, believing is the reason for all your problems, or thinking is responsible for you and/or others not being at peace was actually God in disguise?
At this moment in the world of time and space, the person we are collectively pointing the finger of blame at and seeing as the personification of evil is Russian President Vladimir Putin. Before that, for many it was Donald Trump. And before that, fill in the blank with whomever you saw in that role.
As a coach and psychotherapist, a common topic people frequently talk to me about is their unhappiness with a particular person. And I totally get it, because I have been in the situation where I viewed the cause of my upset as being someone many times. Many times. Like, sometimes for years. Or decades. Lifetimes, really. Maybe even a century (that one was probably a past life from the Old Testament, when we lived for like 500 years. Gee, I can’t believe our lifespan got so much shorter after holding all that resentment!)
Whether they are the people we know – those with whom we are partnered, born to, child-raising, work for, are our BFFs… or whether they are those we don’t know – other drivers, celebrities, political leaders, or those who have committed crimes against other humans – we believe that it is our right to judge and condemn them. “Of course it is”, we think – “they’re doing terrible things, they are not a ‘good’ person, they’re batshit crazy; they’re controlling, or mean, they’re megalomaniacs, narcissists, psychos, sociopaths, whatever. I’m just tellin’ it like it is.”
Those who you are damning might be those with whom you’re in close relationship who are dissing you and pissing you off, or they might be invading another country and murdering people. In Truth it doesn’t matter which – just as A Course in Miracles teaches that there is no order of difficulty in miracles, one is not harder or more difficult than another – there is also no difference in the seeming size or severity of our ego projections of our own guilt and self-hatred onto our bros
The real tellin’ it like it is, is every single one of those people, whether they are Putin or your sweet, beautiful baby, are an extension of God. Not just a “part” of God – like maybe they have like 3 God-cells and the rest is pure evil.
They are Everything that God is. As you are. As I am. God is the sun, we are the rays. God is the ocean, we are the waves.
A Course in Miracles teaches that the only difference between God and his Creations which make up the Sonship – aka all of us, excluding no one – is that He created us, we did not create Him.
So what do we do when someone is acting insanely – straight up pissing us off, trying to control us, or attempting to take over the world?
Our ego minds tell us we need to take action – giving us helpful advice like, “Don’t be a doormat, don’t let them get away with that, demand respect, put them in their place, teach them a lesson. Or, depending on what we’re holding them guilty of – make them answer for their crimes, punish them, imprison them for life, put them to death.
But, I wonder what would happen if we thought that the person we were getting all pissed off at was really God?
The first thing we need to remember is that because we are all one – one joined mind, one unified being – any attack thoughts we are holding against another seeming separate brother will hit us first. When we judge another, we judge ourselves as exactly the same.
To think we don’t, to perceive another as separate from us and guilty, while seeing ourselves as innocent, is believing the biggest lie there is. We are either all made up of God-light, or none of us are.
We also need to remember that we have all been the attacker – whether in this serial lifetime or another. We’ve all been who and where we judge our brothers to be. We’ve reacted in immense fear and joined with the ego – and it has caused all of us at one time or another to be insane, rageful, dictators, attempting to bend others to our will – to invade, to “take over” their domain.
We’ve all harbored murderous thoughts, been driven by the desire for what we think is power, believing we had the right to exert domination over another.
We’ve all been Putin, Hitler, Trump, and whomever else we hold in guilt.
When we see ourselves as separate and view others as evil, or the cause of suffering, we are listening to the voice of the ego, choosing fear as our teacher, and perceiving ourselves solely as bodies.
And what is the ego-mind constantly directing the body to do? ATTACK. Attack is what our ego minds do to cope with the unconscious guilt we feel because we think we separated from God. We experience fear as an underlying representation of that guilt, and instead of consciously dealing with it, we unconsciously attempt to distance ourselves from it by projecting it outward onto other people. Whether we are at war in our minds with those with whom we’re in relational conflict, or we’re witnessing it played out on a larger scale between countries. There’s no difference, it all comes back to the thoughts we are holding about any brother become either weapons of destruction or instruments of peace.
So yes, we DO need to take action. Right action. Action from a place of asking Spirit what is ours to do in this situation.
We may be guided to contribute money, or give of our time and energy to organizations supporting aid to war refugees, or adopt a Ukrainian family – or some other expression in the world. But anything we do needs to come from a place of love, not just for those we perceive as victims.
Victim and attacker are both misperceptions of the ego-mind.
The Truth is that regardless of how they may be behaving in the dream of the world, everyone is an an embodiment of God. Behind whatever ego-disguise they appear to be wearing, whatever part they appear to be playing in the ego’s crazy movie, they are the love of God made manifest.
Like the Joan Osborne song, “What if God was One of Us?” “Just a stranger on the bus, trying to make His way home.” Or like various other Hollywood versions of God – the one portrayed by George Burns as a good-natured wise old dude in “Oh God!”, or as a compassionate, totally silent, nose-tweaking chick by Alanis Morrisette in “Dogma”? Or my personal favorite, Morgan Freeman in “Bruce Almighty”, who said “People want me to do everything for them, but they don’t realize they have the power. You want to see a miracle, son? Be the miracle.”
Rock on, Morgan/God. Let’s BE the miracle. A miracle is a shift in perception from fear to love.
So what if in addition to you asking Spirit what you are supposed to be doing -what if you choose to believe that you are speaking to the Creator when you think of or talk to or about anyone? That you are in the presence of the Divine?
Knowing the Truth of our bros and ourselves means overlooking whatever seems to be happening in the world of form. If you are a student of A Course in Miracles you know this. You might be resisting it but you know it.
The world is only reflecting what we are holding in our minds, so if what that looks like is conflict, attack, invasion, violence, war, then let’s accept responsibility for that as a manifestation of our own thoughts. Let’s work on the cause in our own minds, rather than completely focusing on the effect of how it’s playing out in the world as someone else’s fault.
A Course in Miracles teaches that God is perfect Love. If you believed that you were speaking to a being of absolute, unalterable, unchanging, perfect Love, who loved you completely, totally, ridiculously, unconditionally to-the-moon-and-back, who only intended pure joy for you, how might you be different? Would you treat Him the same way? Might you speak with kindness? With respect? With honoring? Perhaps communicate gratitude? Would you be willing to listen to Him? Trust Him? To accept His guidance? Or would you assume that you knew what He should be doing? Would you second-guess Him, or judge what He said? Demand that He be or act differently?
This does not mean if your bro is acting insanely that you buy into his ego ravings. I’m talking about seeing with Spirit’s vision rather than with the body’s eyes. When we come from love in the service of love, remembering that only love is real, we actually are far more powerful than any military.
If God is perfect Love, and created His One Son – the Sonship – by extension – then that includes Vladimir Putin, and your spouse, and your ex-spouse, your mom and dad, and your mother-in-law, and your teen, and your co-worker, and the President, and anyone else you are holding in guilt.
How could they be less than perfect? How does something that creates by extension create anything not exactly like itself? What part of perfect could create imperfection? How would that even work?
So, what if we assume instead that in each and every person we come into contact with is pure God-substance? That the Divine spark that enlivens every person is actually the Light of God? That there is no one who does not have that light inside of them?
How might our experience of the world transform if we practiced consciously thinking we are speaking to God when we think of anyone? Our loved ones, Putin, anyone?
Even if what they are presently saying or doing does not sound like that. Even if it looks f*cking whacked.
If we could just trust that not only are we brothers, but we are Divine, created whole and perfect by a Divine Creator Who is only capable of extending His wholeness and perfection, and that anything else that we think we see in ourselves or anyone else is a made-up misperception designed by the ego-mind to keep us feeling small and fearful, we would never allow ourselves to be in conflict ever again. There would be no reason to, because we would know the Truth, and we’d just laugh at the ego’s crazy.
If you really believed, as A Course in Miracles says, that the only difference between yourself and others and God is that He created you, you did not create Him, how might you view yourself and everyone else?
Maybe you would understand that we are powerful beyond measure, that we create worlds and everything in them solely with our minds, and that extending love is not only our function – but is the only thing that will truly bring us joy.
If you knew who you really are, you would treat everyone in your life as if they were God – not from a place of littleness, but with the deepest soul-love you can fathom, with complete trust, with reverence for their holiness which is the same as your own. You would see no separation between them and you.
A Course in Miracles calls this the Atonement – the full realization that the separation from God never occurred. This is our natural state – it is the place of pure being, pure awareness, pure presence – that state of ineffable, undefinable bliss that we were in before we had the false belief that we separated from our Creator.
The transformational tool that the Course provides us with, the light that shines all of our darkness away and leads us back to the home we never left – is the unique version of forgiveness that it teaches. This practice is what seemingly magically realigns us with our Divinity, our wholeness, our perfection. The practice of forgiveness is what enables to see our brothers – and therefore ourselves – as the extension of God that they, and we, are.
The steps of forgiveness are:
- Forgiving the fact that that there is nothing to forgive – that you are dreaming an illusion made up by your ego mind.
- Forgive yourself for dreaming it.
- Ask Spirit to help you see it differently and heal your mind.
- Release it and trust that it has been resolved.
As you engage in this practice, your perception will shift from fear to love. You will notice as you change your projections with forgiveness that either the situation in the world will appear to change, or how you feel about it will be very different. Your investment in a particular outcome will decrease, you will feel much more peaceful and centered, and able to just let go of it as you trust more and more.
So when you next find yourself in fear and its faces of judgment, guilt, criticism, resentment, condemnation, or some other form of not seeing your bro as God, remember that your willingness to practice forgiveness, to have your vision corrected by Spirit, to decide that you chose wrongly because you are not at peace, and to choose once again – is your way back to where you came from, knowing who you are, and finding joy, which is your only function as the Son of God.
Rather than asking, “What if God was one of us?” this is what makes us remember that we are one of Him.
Boom.
