You know how sometimes when you’re pissed off about whatever and your mellow is totally harshed – and then somebody says something really funny, and you are instantly snapped out of your waaaaah and laughing hysterically? Sometimes so much that you actually cry? Or pee your pants? And how that expands your reality so much that it can’t fit back into that tight, dark place you had your head in 5 minutes ago?
It’s like you are immediately sucked out of whatever past or future trip you were on and into the hilarious present moment. Aka into joy.
It is so FUN! Isn’t it? We know that. We love that. Why don’t we allow ourselves to stay there all the time?
One of the central teachings in A Course in Miracles is that the whole illusory Universe of time and space was made up as a result of “a tiny mad idea at which the Son of God remembered not to laugh”. (T-27.VIII.6:2)
That nanomoment was the catalyst of the ego dream of separation, which we experience as our “reality”, and pretty much the most glaring example in literally the history of the world of what happens when we forget to laugh. We end up taking ourselves, other people, politics, our bodies, religion, etc. – way too seriously instead of seeing the humor in it all.
In Chapter 27, Part VIII Jesus talks about the importance of our laughing at the complete ridiculousness of the idea that we could ever be separate from God. But because we are extensions of God and therefore do possess the powerful ability to create as He does, we made up this insanely intricate dream of the world of time and space and projected it onto the screen of our minds like an uber-realistic movie.
This movie covers all genres – drama, horror, romance, adventure, thriller, mystery, action, sci-fi fantasy…and it’s all about the central character of THE BODY. Since we appear to live in said body, that makes it really hard to remember it’s not real. It’s also why we don’t often see the movie for the absurd comedy that it actually is.
The concept that the world is fake is such a tough one for students of A Course in Miracles because everything seems so real – just like the special effects in movies.
For instance, I personally can’t watch horror flicks – never could. I’ve seen like three in my whole life – because even though technically I get it that it’s Hollywood, and Jason isn’t a real person, the call isn’t really coming from inside the house, and I’m probably not going to wind up in someone’s “it puts the lotion on its skin” pit – my mind makes it’s so real that I end up staying up all night freaking out.
I decided I could either subject myself to checking under beds, hearing noises in the basement and sleeping with a knife under my pillow, or I could just choose funny over horror and laugh my ass off.
Which is basically what Jesus is telling us to do in A Course in Miracles.
He’s not saying,
“Well, you forgot to laugh way back at the beginning of time so now you’re screwed. You made up that dream-bed and now you gotta lie in it forever.”
Ummm… no. He’s teaching us how we can wake up from this crazy-ass dream, largely by laughing at it and refusing to take it seriously.
First, it’s having the willingness to own that we are the dreamer of the dream and stop giving other people, the world, and anything that appears to happen it the power to hijack our peace.
Then, it’s forgiving it all – the tiny, mad idea, and anything or anyone that we’re holding responsible for anything – remembering that it’s all part of the illusion we’re making up and projecting.
Finally, it’s making the decision to see the situation differently. Instead of being mad, if I can laugh at all of the bullshit I sometimes tell myself just so I get to hold onto my story it loosens my grip on it. I can let go of it and it morphs into peace in that instant.
If you’re not able to do that because you believe the dream is too sad, abusive, hurtful, or painful right now – you can still remember that as real as it feels, it isn’t – because you can’t separate from God. The truth of that can enable you to see the crazy inherent in thinking you ever could. It allows you to transform your experience by shifting your perception from fear to love.
Thanks so much for laughing with me today.
