So, does being a student of A Course in Miracles mean we have to choose between being rich and being enlightened? Does expressing our Divinity equal being broke-ass poor?
Is having money drinking the illusion kool-aid?
No, but worshipping the God of Money isn’t going to lead us to abundance, peace, love, or joy, either.
ACIM teaches that the world we see is an illusion, made up in our minds – stating,
“There is no world! This is the central thought the Course attempts to teach.”
(W-pI.132.6:2-3)
This means no world – so anything appearing to be in and of this world – including money, lack of money, bodies, food, air, water, medicine, etc. is all considered magic and part of our dream experience. We seem to find food and water easier to… ummm, swallow… but when it comes to finances, we go kind of crazy.
Having money and not having money are both part of the illusory experience of the ego world. Neither is our reality.
However, abundance is a natural state that arises from our awareness of love’s presence, while scarcity results from a mindset of fear. Fear and the projections of lack, scarcity, and limitation that accompany it are just misperceptions in our minds that arise from believing we are separate from God. Forgiving those ego-based false beliefs returns us to Oneness, to the awareness of being the abundance, love, appreciation, peace, trust, and joy that is the Truth of us.
Lesson 50 in the Workbook of A Course in Miracles is,
“I am sustained by the Love of God.”
That is not our experience in the world of form. We use money here as a system of exchange because it is part of the egoic belief that we don’t have everything we need within us and that we have to give something to get something in return.
In Oneness, giving and receiving are the same.
So is the answer to give away all of our stuff, quit our jobs, not honor our financial responsibilities, wreck our credit, be homeless, carless, and hungry, waiting for the big UPS Truck in the Sky to show up?
No. But as A Course in Miracles states:
“Only the Holy Spirit knows what you need. For He will give you all things that do not block the way to light. And what else could you need? In time, He gives you all the things that you need have, and will renew them as long as you have need of them.”
ACIM T-13.VII.12:1-4
So when we embrace the Truth that we are sustained by the Love of God, it means we know that Spirit is our Source, and that all we need flows through us as extensions of the Divine if we allow it to. That’s the key – allowing it to. Which means not obstructing it – not God-blocking ourselves with fear, lack, doubt, worry, or thinking we know what exactly it is that we need.
It’s all about what we are seeing with who’s vision.
If we’re in fear, thinking we’re guilty of separating from the Love of our Creator, looking through the body’s eyes we project that guilt onto the world and see scarcity. This is reflected in our belief that we are small, alone, limited, powerless, have only ourselves to count on, that there’s not enough for everyone, and that if someone has more someone else has less – and that will be our experience.
If we see with Christ’s vision – staying in trust, knowing we are part of God, that we are an extension of the Source – we will believe that we are always taken care of, that things work out for our highest good, that money shows up when it needs to, that we are perfectly provided for at all times, and that we are abundance – that will be reflected to us. We’ll see Divine ideas, inspiration, helpful bros, opportunities, synchronicity, serendipity, and silver linings everywhere.
