Do you ever feel like an imposter? Fraudulent? Like if everyone knew how full of shit you are no one would listen to, hire, hang out with, or love you?
Word, Bro. Homegirl spent an entire day recently mainlining that ego Mean Girl’s IV of bullshit – a cocktail that included the fetal position, ugly crying, and the insistence that after 19 years of living / teaching / coaching A Course in Miracles, I’m a failure at it and am colossally faking everyone out.
Wtf is behind this idea that we’re imposters?
We have two voices in our minds constantly telling us who we are.
The one that is causing our imposter feeling is the false identity of the ego.
This voice bullies us – demanding, “Who the f*ck do you think you are?” and then proceeds to tell us who it thinks we are in graphic terms. It assures us that we’re posers – and that the word “imposter” actually comes from “I’m poser”.
This false self says we’re guilty, deceitful, not good enough; we don’t know what we’re talking about, and we’re fooling everybody. But not for long – it’s only a matter of time before they find out and we’re shamed, humiliated, rejected, abandoned, possibly tarred and feathered – and seen for the charlatans that we are.
Spirit’s voice, by contrast, is gentle and loving – reminding us who the f*ck we really are as perfect creations of the Divine. Innocent, whole and pure. We are all the one Son of God – or the Sonship as A Course in Miracles identifies us. We are perfect as extensions of the Love of the Creator – which means that every characteristic of God is present in us, and nothing else is.
How would perfection be able to create anything other than perfection?
Any negative qualities we believe we possess are just part of our egoic mass hallucination that we are or could even be separate from our Creator.
It is not arrogant to know your worth as a perfect son of God. It is arrogant to believe that you created yourself, or that what God created is imperfect – both of which are part of the ego’s thought system. Arrogance always covers over intense feelings of self-doubt and insecurity. Certainly, if you believe you created yourself, you know on a deep level that that isn’t true and will then doubt your authenticity.
Similarly, if you align with the belief that the Perfect can create the imperfect (how would that even work?) then you not only misunderstand the nature of perfection, but this misperception will cause you to feel very insecure.
What the true imposter – the ego mind – has taught us to believe is that we are guilty of rejecting God and God has therefore retaliated by rejecting us.
But again, if God is perfect Love, how would He be capable of rejection or anything else that was not an expression of perfect Love?
And if we are an extension of perfection, how could we reject Him?
A Course in Miracles explains it this way:
Perfect love casts out fear.
If fear exists, then there is not perfect love.
But:
Only perfect love exists.
If there is fear,
It produces a state that does not exist.
T-1.VI.5:4-8
Now, I don’t want to be judgmental here, but the ego is full of sh*t.
So when we get sucked into the imposter vortex, it is crucial for us to remember the Truth of who we are as the Son of God. To forgive ourselves for our judgmental thoughts of self / others (remember, that’s the same thing) and ask to have our perceptions healed so we can see things differently.
When we choose love over fear, we withdraw our allegiance to the imposter of the ego and allow our authentic selves to shine as the light of the world that we are.
Take it easy
The Eagles
Take it easy
Don’t let the sound of your own wheels
Drive you crazy
Lighten up while you still can
Don’t even try to understand
Just find a place to make your stand
And take it easy
